Colour-enhanced scanning electon micrograph of
rod-shaped Clostridium difficile clinging to the
microvilli of the human gut. This bacterium is
often responsible for holiday diarrhoea and is of increasing concern as a hospital acquired infection, particularly affecting the elderly.
